Re: Throttle Body Air foil Thing ? (davecoffman)
Has anyone had any experience with these things ? Do they really do anything ?
They make your wallet about $40 lighter... :jester
I have one that I bought a long time ago before I knew better and I never noticed any difference after installing it... It's been on two cars so far and getting ready to go on my LT4, but that's only because I already have it...
If you don't already own one then skip it, you won't miss not having one...
The day I bought my car I put one on with a K&N filter and noticed a minimal difference but that was probably due mostly to the filter ? In retrospect I wouldn't expect this item would make any difference except at high rpm where it's the most difficult to guage. The guys who sell them swear by them and many suggest them if they're selling them.
My car came with a plastic one, and trashed it when I got my nice 52mm unit. Well... at least we don't have guys asking about Tornados right?! :lolg:
My Vette gained over 100 hp adding just the air foil and the K&N warning sticker on the air cleaner. Maybe I got the additional hp from the sticker.

I bought one when I first bought my Vette. If I would have known then what I know now, I wouldn't have bothered with it. It is still on my Vette, just seems like a waste of time at this point to remove it. I have enough other things I need to do to my Vette before I worry about the air foil again.
F-body guy did back to back runs with and without the air foil several years ago to see if there were gains, if any. It gained him 2.4 peak hp and 2.1 peak torque. That's not much, but the AVERAGE gain (from 1500 rpm to 5800) rpm was 5.3 horsepower, 1.9 ft/lbs of torque. Picking up 5+ hp for $30 isn't such a bad deal if you ask me.
Interesting... so at least it isn't a complete waste of money.
But then again, I have a feeling that the WS6's engine (which might not have been totally at a stock point then anyway) might be pulling a bit more air than my L98. Sort of like how roller rockers give "50hp" on an engine making already 900...
The higher the RPM, the more difference it would make. Of course, the L98 isn't a high RPM engine, so the results aren't spectactular. Airflow is the name of the game, however, and every little bit adds up.
I admit, I bought one too. My only thing is that all the aftermarket throttle bodies are shaped like it. I mean, we pay lots of money to match ports and remove obstructions in the air channels, so you can't really argue that the factory design isn't a considerable obstacle.

Bought it before I found this board and it's sometimes great wealth of knowledge. Save your bones for better mods.
BUT if you have to spend your bones on it, I'll sell you mine for $5 less then any vendor.
