Default Black Smoke

Hey everyone, I started my 89 for the first time in a few months yesterday. When I got it to turn over some black smoke came from my exhaust. I let it run for a half hour and the only smoke was white (clear, the type you get from a hot exhaust in cold weater) Anyway, after I shut it off I looked at the snow behind the pipes and it had black spots on the snow where the exhaust was comming out. Do I have a serious problem?

Truely BLACK smoke is gasoline. Oil burns bluish. While sitting so long, the injectors may have leaked excess fuel into the cylinders. Now, if this continues after you start driving it regularly, you will have some trouble shooting to do. White amoke is generally, steam. Again, on a "first start" after hibernation, I wouldn't be too concerned. You could check your oil for excessive gas vapors and/or antifreeze, and the radiator, to make sure it is as full as when you parked it. Otherwise, take it out and drive it normally (gently), get it FULLY warmed up and start checking from there. Odds, are, your fine...

RACE ON!!!

Cool! That's what I was hoping to hear. I'll pay attention this spring and since they'll be no snow, that means no black snow. Seriously, I have a long trip comming up in a few months (moving) and I was praying I wouldn't have to fix anything.

:iagree: I agree with CFI-EFI...It's probably just carbon in the pipes.
