Default help needed

I have a 84 that i just bought. There is only one major problem with the car and that is when i am running low on gas and even out of gas my display never goes to 0. When i fill the car up the bars will raise but will never go past four. Is there anyway for me to reset my gas gauge next time my gas runs out?????

wow, thats weird. sorry i cant help with resetting the guage.

it could be that the float is stuck, inside the fuel tank.

apparently you can change out the pump w/o pulling the tank. so maybe wait till your low on gas, then open it up and see if the float moves properly.

i would also wait and see if anyone else has any good info to give.

Yes, almost certainly a float and/or sender problem. :iagree:

You can check the accuracy of the gauge and the circuit by using resistors.

On my 89, 90ohms is a full tank, 45ohms half a tank. So, find out if this is the same on yours and get the right resistors (from radio shack - less than $2.00) and put them in the circuit after disconnecting the sending unit.

If the gauge now reads right, the wiring and cluster are good and the sender itself is bad.
