I understood that you had to get the threads in your heads modified to take the 7/16" studs. The main benefit being that they are a stronger setup.

You don't have to rethread; they will fit, and are stronger. If you are going to get new rockers anyway, I would use 7/16. Check to get proper ones, depending on useing guide-plates or not. I you use self-aligning rockers, don't use guide-plates. If you use standard rockers (not self-aligning), use guide-plates, and hardened pushrods.

The old iron heads had press-in 3/8" studs. The aluminum heads have threads for a 3/8" shank, but that is the same size shank on the 7/16" studs. The part that screws into the head is smaller than the actual rocker stud above it.

Ok. The lower part of the rocker stud part that screws into the cylinder head is 3/8" no matter if it is a 3/8" stud or 7/16" stud on the top side for the rocker. :)

I think you need to check that.

Every SB head I've come across that has screw in studs has 7/16 x 14 threads on the end that screws into the head. In fact, Big Block studs, which are 7/16th on both ends (7/16th X 24 top and 7/16th x 14 bottom), screw right in to the SB head and are a direct replacement/upgrade.

The only Chevy studs that I know of that are 3/8th (in the head) are for the Mark V and VI big block engines.

:iagree:

The base of my stock rocker studs was 7/16" but the top was 3/8"; my 7/16" rocker studs are 7/16" top & bottom.

When going to 1.6:1 RRs upgrading to 7/16" studs is a good idea to assure valve train stability; with 1.7:1 RRs it is an even better idea. When the studs deflect under load you lose valve lift.

Honest mistake, same principal idea. No modifications needed.
