Default Residual Clutch Problem

Alright here's the deal: After I had this car for a couple weeks (Last

January), I noticed the clutch feeling really soft and then bottoming out. So I

replaced the fluid and then it did the same thing a couple days later. So I

replaced the clutch master cylinder. It then took about 4 months for it to go

through another whole canister full of fluid . I leave this morning and the

clutch pedal bottoms out again 3 weeks after filling up the fluid. So, did the

new clutch master cylinder go bad already, or is there some other problem

im not noticing? I know there is a slave cylinder for the clutch but how would

I go about determining if it is the problem? By the way, whenever I go to refill

the fluid, there is always an accumulation of dirt/particles in the bottom, not

too much, but its there nonetheless. Any advice or help will be greatly

appreciated.

You got a leak somewhere, check the master, line, connecting points and the slave. You might want to pull the drivers side panel under the steering wheel and see if you have clutch fluid leaking out the back of the master cyliner. You'll need a 7mm socket to remove the mounting screws.

Do you have a way to get under the Vette? Some ramps or something? You have to look under there to see if the slave is leaking. It will be obvious if it is.

I dont have any ramps but I can get up under the front when it's jacked up. Last time I replaced the master it was leaking into the inside of the driver's side so I guess I'll have to look there again. Can you tell me where about the slave cylinder is located so that I can check to see if it's leaking?

Do you know what a bell housing looks like? If so, it is on the driver's side of the bell housing. It looks like a cylinder shaped black unit bolted to the bellhousing. It has a braided S/S line running into it from the master unit. The leak could be going inside the bell housing and you'll see the dripping from the bottom of the bell housing. Otherwise, look around the fitting connections and the slave unit.

Here is a picture of the bell housing with the transmission off. I'm pointing to the stud ball and the slave cylinder is mounted just to the left of my finger where the 2 nuts are. Obviously, the slave is removed.

Thanks for the picture, I'm going to look at it this weekend to see if its the slave cylinder.

Takes a 13mm deep socket to get the two slave mounting nuts off. Pretty tight in there so bring an assortment of extnesions and a universal.

I just replaced mine and I was told it was best to replace both the slave and master cylinder at the same time or you run into your situation. It wasn't hard to replace the slave, just difficult to get to, like everything else on the vette.
