Alright, the right side of my cluster in my 89 is pretty dim, and I had just assumed that this was because the bulbs needed to be replaced But then, the other night with the lights on, the tach all of the sudden becomes bright as can be, then next time I'm in the car it's dim again. It's done this a couple of times. Any ideas? Should I still replace the bulbs? And I remember hearing something about a light sensor, could it be related to this?
Thanks, Steve
Great! It's the four piece set right? I've seen the set in Mid Amerca for 20 bucks, seems a little pricey, anyone know where I could get 'em cheaper?
Thanks Steve
If you can get all 4 for $20, jump on it, but I think that price is each. They're usually about that each. I found them at one of the local auto chain stores, I think advance, if memory serves, for less than a dime a piece because they were on clearance. You may get lucky. The stores that can get them usually charge around $17 each.
The bulb you're looking for is sylvania 882. I would do all four at once so you're not taking the dash apart constantly. Also, make sure the bulbs are clean, especially of the oils from your fingers. They'll fail early if dirty. Save the ones that still work ok for spares.
Thanks that link is great! I got that price from mid america, it looks like the 84-88 bulb kit is $49.99 & the 89 kit is $19.99 here's a link to their page http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=827
The first thing you should do is look at the bulbs and determine if they are burned out or not. Then buy replacements. If the bulbs are good, then you likely have a problem with a connector on the front (as the driver sees them) circuit board. There is a single row of pins on the front board that plugs into a socket on the rear board. The pin closest to the center of the circuit board carries the lamp current and the age relaxed spring on the socket causes a resistance connection which makes heat and will get hot enough to unsolder the pin on the front board. Resoldering the pin will not work, I soldered a short piece of small insulated hookup wire from the pin to the socket and I will never have that problem again.
In some areas, the 882 bulbs are becoming rare. I took my dash apart last night and had 3 of them out. I went to 4 places before I found any and he only yad 2 of them. I used an 891 for the other spot which is similar externally but is a little brighter. These bulbs were $9 a piece and the Walmart didn't have any.
Hang on a second......Aren't the bulbs in the 84-88's different than the 89's? I think the 84-88 uses halogen bulbs and 89 uses xenon. They're not interchangable....are they? I wonder if the xenon bulbs are easy to obtain as well, anyone know?
Thanks Steve
