Hi, I just purchased a '96 with the LT4 engine. I believe the intake is leaking front and rear and plan on replacing the gaskets myself. I'm looking for feedback to ensure success. Other than not starting the car for 24 hours after installing the new gaskets and using the GM sealant, any other suggestions? Anything I should replace while I have it apart? Note: I'm planning on buying the gaskets from GM.
I would recommend the GMPP gaskets, they fit the LT4 better. Not sure of the part number but it ends with 77. Be sure you get the mating surfaces extremely clean to avoid future leaks. Torque using the recommended sequence, increasing the torque gradually with each pass. I used The Right Stuff RTV based on recommendations from this forum and I would recommend it as well. Good luck, take your time and if you do some searches on the forum there are a bunch of threads with details.
from the GMPP catalog, the special tall port LT4 intake gaskets are #12367777. these are only one per part number, and they're expensive. they're the only gasket that doesn't block the top of the port. (even the production LT4 gasket blocks the top.)
i see this leak thing as being pretty common. did GM do something wrong at the factory?
The sealant I'm going to use is GM # 12346141 It's assembly adhesive especially developed for engine oil joints. I have a LT1 and have to do the same thing. I'm using GM's intake gasket set. Is this going to block any of the ports?
12367777 gaskets won't do you any good. You have to port match the intake to it.
hmmm... i didn't think about the intake manifold. i remember for sure that my stock heads had ports taller than the stock gaskets. is the stock intake as short as the gasket? (i had a port-matched intake.)

yeah, i bought the 7777 for the same reason. Stock ones blocked the top .5cm of the port. After getting the intake on and everything everyone on here told me that if you match the gasket to the intake and to the head, it still doesn't line up  .

:iagree:
Permatex "The Right Stuff" works awesome. I used this when I began to leak oil from the front and back of the intake. This stuff seals very well. I have since used it on the front, back, and corners of my oil pan gasket as well. A little pricie at about $11 a can, but worth it. This stuff is the s*%#t.

Yep, the intake blocks the port as well. Below is a pic of my intake. The port on the left is rough sized to the "77" gasket while the one on the right is still stock. If you look at the injector hole on one versus the other you can easily tell how much material has to be removed.
Here's a shot of the ports on the heads matched to the gasket. Although not nearly as much as the intake, material was removed from the heads as well...
