Is there any reason that my starters on my car keep failing one after another, other than the o'rielly ones just suck??? They arent losing teeth, just quit cranking after a few months

Re: Why does my car eat starters??? (Wheelman)
 You don't tell us much about your car or the starters you are using
Heat from the exhaust/ headers is a major cause of problems...actually you didn't tell us what was going bad on your starters either
The Mini/Hi torgue starter is a good replacement, it is smaller and doesn't get as close to the exhaust.
If you are using rebuilt starters from discount auto stores, that could be your problem.
There are two grades of rebuilts! the first and cheapest is to just replace the parts that are bad...the second and more expensive is to install all new parts!
Hope this is helpfull, a little more info about your specific situation might get you some better answers
Re: Why does my car eat starters??? (jackdaroofer)
Yes I am using rebuilt starters from the auto parts store, only because of the lifetime warranty. Even though they aren't as good as a new one, I am approaching my 4th replacement in 6 months, so I dont think it is just their starters. I think the solenoid is what keeps going out. Everytime I take it in to get one tested, they hook it up to the machine and it will spin but wont actually come out of the starter case. The last time I had one tested I saw the guy move the power lead to another starter terminal and the gear came out, but did not spin...So it would do both seperately but not at the same time. Hope this helps...

 If you are buying from someone like A------- A---. it is probably their starters. Seems like half the people going through the front door are returning something that didn't work
!
As I said, there are two levels of rebuild! The lifetime warranty is nice, but it doesn't cover the time you have spent removing and reinstalling the starters and if you break down away from home and have to be towed, it's on you!
:D I hate to say this,it sounds kind of bad, but you get what you pay for!
Sounds like it's not installed with the proper clearance. I don't know what the "old style" starter requirement is, but the small, gear reduction factory starters need tell you to use a paper clip to measure the clearance between the root and the peak of the flywheel and starter. (probably ~.040") If it's in cocked, you will trash the gear and/or the retaining mechanism.
