Default FX3 replacement

Okay, my FX3 system has problems. At least one shock and actuator is bad and need replacing...probably more. I want to keep the car as it came from the factory, so I want to start getting the stuff fixed, but in the meantime, does it hurt anything to unplug the actuators and use a standard shock? If so, what is a good all around shock for ride and handling. I don't do anything drastic with the car.

Also. both the gear on the top of the shock and the female counterpart in the actuator are NOT completely round with teeth...about 2/3 teeth and the rest is flattened off. Jeffvette, who I believe is correct, says this is a no-no. The only reason I'm asking if this is so, is because my logical mind is saying: how does the actuator and shock fit together to be in the right location to start with. Right now, they fit together only one way because of their corresponding flat spots. If they are both supposed to be completely "toothed" all around, I assume there must be some kind of alignment area (like on the opti driveshaft and gear). Anyway...I know the shock is bad because it just goes round n round. :)

On my car the plastic gear in the actuator is toothed all around as is the metal gear on the shock.
