I'm getting a code 26. Quad driver circuit 1. In my GM shop manual, it has the breakdown for the test procedure using a TECH 1 tool. 2 questions: where does one get a Tech 1 or the equivalent aftermarket scanner and 2. is there an easier way to pinpoint the problem? I
I have no experience with this code so I started digging thru all my tech books just for kicks. They either make no mention of this code. 1 book says due to the difficulty refer to dealer (big help) I talked to my friend who is a pretty good gm mechanic at the local dealer and he hasnt heard of the code (off the top of his head) Hopefully someone has some input. :chevy
I don't have a 92 shop manual in front of me...but as I remember it, the quad drivers are in the ecm, and not something that is serviceable....it's just replace the ecm. The one book with 92 codes-for 26="dealer service"...
Can anyone confirm that my memory is holding up?
It CAN be the ECM, but it can also be a variety of relays or solenoids. I guess my question is, other than buying a scanner, is there anyway to check the various relays to see if they're working....trying to isolate the problem.
You could check just about any relay with a wiring diagram and a volt meter....the manual should show that to you. BTW-How can you drive a vette in Alaska in the winter?!
I don't. Just getting her ready for summer...unfortunately I have a lot of time to get to the bottom of this problem. I've taken it to the local chevrolet dealer and I suppose if I were willing to leave it so they could experiment for a few days and charge me a couple of thousand dollars, they could probably fix it...no guarantee. So, I figure with time and a scanner and other diagnostics, if I need them, I can fix it. I've always done all my own work on her...no reason to stop now.
For the record, there is a guy up here with a C5 that drives his all winter. Hurts like hell to see that thing driving around at -40. I can just imagine some idiot sliding into him and watching the fiberglass disintegrate. He's crazy.

Re: code 26 (emoshn)
I am throwing that code right now also. It deals with a set of solnoids and other diagnostics with the EGR/AIR system. The book tells us to run checks on the different parts of the EGR/AIR system with a voltage meter.
Hope this helps. Code 26,Check EGR,Canister Purhe and Air pump relays with a digital Ohm meter>Aresistance of less than 18 Ohms indicates a bad relay. If OK, potential ECM failure.http://www.c4vettes.com/ecm.htm
As far as I know, a 26 is the purge control solenoid. The ECM monitors the circuit for reference voltage which should drop to zero when purge is commanded (ie, driver grounds the solenoid). If it sees the voltage staying high, it will spit out the code. If sees the voltage go low when purge isn't commanded, it will spit out the code. Wiring or solenoid the most probable cause and a Tech 1 (which is bidirectional) will allow you to command the solenoid to see if it's at least functional.
