I keep hearing all these people with experience building engines tell me that lower RPM stroker style torque monster engines are much better than high RPM screamers.
They cite better durability, power down low etc. Ive always found these types of engines with traction problems and 'boring'. They give you a big kick if it even hooks up and then as you wind it out, youre slowly losing power as the engine note sings higher and higher. Unexciting.
Ive always thought the other way would be better. Like ZR-1 style (a DOHC is obviously out of the question), or turbo style. To put a 7000 RPM powerplant in your car (if you have too much torque down low, you just sit there and spin your wheels). How about a huge cam, worked heads, titanium valves, etc. ? A 406 that can wind to 7000 RPM?
Re: ideas for engine builds....moaner or screamer? (dizwiz24)
If i could have both, I would take it. Ala ZR1, but its tougher ($$$) to get both with a pushrod engine. I also dont think a high rpm machine is best suited to an automatic.
Maybe when this 86 is done i'll get a 6 speed and build it for high rpm power.

Oh sure, you want him play follow the leader. Do whatever ski_dwn_it says, right. I think he would be better suited checking a thread with 5 responses that can only be found with 4 days of searching and 4 of the responses are "Yeah I'd like info on that too" and one "I have a V6 camaro with an automatic that revs"
What are you, king of the internet?? You know all there is to know about all the threads/topics on this board? Prove it!!!

I think you just answered your own question!
As far as traction problems, some driving skill is required if you want big power to hook up. :chevy

I love this topic. I won't argue or debate on the forum, but my good freind and I have been arguing about this for 100 years.I finally shut the debate down. I told him that I have friends thatlike fat chicks. I have friends that like skinny chicks I have friends that like ugly chicks. heck I know some guys that like hairy guys  All that matters is everyone gets nookie! :reddevil

Pete K, you are a true sage.. The word "succinct" comes to mind...
Re: ideas for engine builds....moaner or screamer? (dizwiz24)
If your going to drag race, higher reaving engine is probably better "probably" sicne move REV's normally equal more HP, but lower REV's normally equal more Torque.
When you drive down the street and decide to floor the gas pedal and you get that G force feeling pushing you into your seat... don't make any mistakes, its not the HP your feeling, its the Torque and since you'll be arrond 1500, 2000 rpm, you'll be closer the the Lower Reving engines power band and feel the power.
But on the 1/4 mile, HP win's almost every time.. I'd be willing to bet that on the 1/8 it would be a different story and torque is probably just has important has HP.
Re: ideas for engine builds....moaner or screamer? (vader86)
I've never driven a naturally aspired small block that made too much torque down low (and I've owned a few, including a solid roller, high compression 406), so I just can't see that being an issue. Today, there's just no reason to leave stroke on the table, just build the engine correctly so that you get both stroke AND 7000 rpms. It's not that hard or even that expensive anymore.

Well, "expensive" is a relative term but I'd love for you to give a few examples. Especially those that would be applicable to a true daily driver. Thanks...
