my 96 is throwing the check engine light. took it to a mechanic who said it is a smog pump code. he checked all the passages and everything seemed clear, so the pump itself is suspect. unfortunately i dont have the money for a new pump and labor to install. i dont drive the car but 2 or 3 times a month, so would i be doing any collateral damage to the engine by driving it? Ill get the pump fixed, but probably not until summer when I work more hours. i really doubt this is a problem, but thought i would ask anyway. people take their pumps off and the cars run even better right?
Its just for emissions, had no effect anything else. Not sure if you have an electric or mechanical pump. But if you happen to have a pulley driven pump I just took off mine, and could sell it to you for cheap. Worked perfectly, no noise.
Mine died too-guess my car washing drained too much water into the motor and seized...it is electric in the left front area immediately below the headlight...takes one all of 10 minutes to replace.
No harm...just increase in emissions upon startup before the cats come up to temperature.
