I never took the pump out of my vette, but my 97 Tahoe has the pump mounted in a plastic "tube" about 6" diameter and 8-10" tall. Its spring loaded against the bottom of the tank. I guess in the Tahoe that is the sump.
On a side note- I have sumped many gas tanks. Used ones. They say dont weld to a used tank but as long as you empty it completely and let it air out, then rinse with water it works fine. Sometimes I leave some water in it when I weld to displace the fumes in the tank. I have never had a problem.
yea, when i welded up my camaro tank I not only washed it really well, I filled it most of the way up with water to make sure there wasnt very much volume to contain vapors.
My '94's gas tank has a plastic bladder/liner on the inside. I gon't believe that the gasoline comes in contact with the metal at all. You would have to penetrate the liner and then seal around the pickup tube.
