Default TPiS Long Tube Header Install Complete!

Couple posts thrown into 1 from other forums. Enjoy!

installation wasn't too bad but the passenger side was a pita! total time 8 hours with 2 part store runs and helping other people with their projects. i am pretty sure i could of cut it down to 4-5 hours if everything went smooth and i didn't help anyone with their stuff.....lol

after i welded on the egr tube fitting onto the TPiS headers i could not fit it up thru the bottom and i be damned to fit it from the top......lol so i reused a piece of tube from the air system cause i !air on the car. i did pull the started to see if it would give me more room because i had to pull the dipstick but it would not come out with out damage so i modified the header flange on the head side with a cut out like the original's slid right in. tried to put starter on and couldn't. repulled header and fitted starter had a problem there broke starter selanoid so i had to run to parts store and buy a new selanoid sp? fit it starter back in and then header slid right in with some massaging

i rank this project for the average Joe 5 out of 10. pretty basic and straight forward as long as you can get the car off the ground high enough to work the headers up. i have a lift at work so it makes it more easy

blew a header gasket on first dyno pull today but still pulled

235 rwhp

337 torque.

i didn't do another run due to the gasket. i think it would of pulled 260-270 maybe alittle higher. i was hoping in the 290 range and 380+ torque. will find out in a few weeks when i do the crank pulley and MAT relocation sensor gonna re-dyno her. A/F was 12.9 which is real good for a stock regulator. i got an adjustable one but when i checked the fuel pressure not about a 2 months ago over Rich's house it was at 45 psi so i decided to leave this alone for now until i pull the plenum for something that needs to be done..

i was hot when i dynoed also because when i got their we hooked it up and did the first run. we had another car (LS1) getting tuned and they called me to tell me to come and dyno the car. i wanted atleast a half hour to cool her down

well it wasn't a header gasket. just blew the EGR midshift setup i put in till i can rip it out right. used a piece of the exhaust rubber hose running from the top of the air tubes back to the air pump. hose clamped it down on the EGR valve on the header to the cut piece i fixed up to bolt the EGR system back together.

shewwww i was happy to see that. still gotta button up a few things. i want to change my fuel filter tomorrow, put a fresh set of cut back plugs in her, finish up the EGR crap, add the new water temp sensor that goes to the head, and grease the chassis.

tonight i hooked up my tranny cooler and put the other 2 3" band clamps on the header collector and retightened the head bolts.

only took her out twice. once around the block to feel a first gear pull and then to the dyno and let me tell you there is a BIG difference in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear :D

slowly but surely i'm getting her buttoned up for the track friday some ice on the intake between runs, 18 psi in the Goodyear F1's, 111 octane, 1500 stall then launch and collect my 12 second time slip

DA for friday should be -1350 to -1640 range 7pm -10pm

here ya go fella's!

thanks to Force for hosting it :)

TPiS Headers Open Exhaust

sorry bout the choppyness gotta reformat this computer and maybe add some more ram. the ole P3 1000 is cutting it like she used too...lol

Where was the smoke coming from?

I had smoke from my Hedman install, it was the #8 tube burning the evap box b/c there was not enough clearence. It filled the shop w/ smoke from that and the oil squirting on the headers when we did the rocker adjustments.

Sounds NICE!

thanks fella's

War,

the smoke was coming from the EGR hookup on the the #8 cylinder. i used a piece of the old AIR tubing thinking that would hold the pressure and heat. thats what blew. i'm fixing it tomorrow. tonight i fixed the trans cooler leak, added a new water temp sensor between #6 and #8 hole and capped the EGR off at the connection by #8 for now until i can find some more time and pull the TPI to cap it right.

Maybe it's just your camcorder, but it sounds much tamer than I'd expect.

Here's a sound clip of my stock '85 with a single carsound cat, dynomax rear y and muffler elims:

Central,

it's not the camcorder it's Ulead. i use sony image mixer to download the vids from the camera and Ulead to compress it. the camera i got is the new sony mini-DVD100 worth about 800 bucks.

watching a vid and hearing it in person is 2 different things. i noticed with my front Y pipe (non pre-cats) gutted cat and no mufflers i got a hollow raspy sound. now it don't back fire from low pressure it just idles down when i drop gears coming to a stop. sounds alot more full than the previous setup. going from 1 1/4 inch primary stock shorties to 1 3/4 inch long tubes is a definate difference on sound and power

BTW went to the track tonight and couldn't run. long story short they were over packed and my friend was suppose to move my car up while i ran to the bathroom then the track officials hopped in it and moved it and said i couldn't run this week :mad

that sucked too DA was around -1500 and i am sure i would of turned a 12 second slip in  oh well maybe next week :flag

Wow.. sucks that you missed out on that. I'm hoping to go with headers as soon as funds allow. It's on the list after rent, food, bills, gas and insurance. Hopefully I can get these thorleys to fit, Tri-Ys should make for a distinctive sound.

I know what you're talking about, downshifting to the stops, it really cackles. Love it!

I just put my TPIS headers on yesterday. It took 5 hours with 2 trips to the muffler shop because of the Y pipe. I went from TPIS to free flow cat to power effects exhaust, when opened all the way up its loud but GREAT

Did you say no pre-cats and gutted main cat? How are you going to get it through the test when you get your letter?

My stock LT1 with a cat gutted by a previousowner barely made it through on the third try. With a cam and headers it was no chance on the test.

Mic-

i was wondering what happened to you dude. if it means anything to you i seriously doubt you would have gotten that 12 sec run Fri night. because there were so many people there, and most of them kept blowing up, the track prep went from bad to worse as the night progressed. even my GF couldnt hook on her drag radials! everyone was spinning last night, so i doubt you would have gotten those 1.8 60fts needed to run your 12. my best run of the night was my first, after that my E/Ts just kept getting worse cause the track prep kept deteriorating

BTW - i owe you $5
