Default Electrical help needed.....

OK guys, as all you electrical gurus know...us Mechanical Engineers need a little help with electrical items.
I have copied the text from the B&M instruction manual to here for setting up the electrical connectors on the shifter off the stock harness.

I have a hard copy of the electrical scematic, that illustrates the different color wires off the stock unit. If need be I can probably get it onto disk and post the picture.

BAckup Lights - LT GRN
STARTER Solenoid - PPR
Starter enable relay -DRK Grn & wht

But I am having a hard time remembering if we had to have our keys in neutral or park for them to turn, to define what type of safety switch system we had. Do our ignitions turn to start in 1-3 gears? I know they will not start there, and don't think they will even turn, leading me to believe we have the mechanical type of safety.

Can someone help me with how this thing needs hooked up.

Here is the Text:

STEP 14. On GM vehicles the neutral safety
switch may be located on the shifter (steering
column or console), or it may be a mechanical
interlock in the steering column that prevents
the key from turning to the Start position
unless the shifter is in the Park or Neutral
position. Identify the type of neutral safety
system you have. If the key will not turn to the
Start position unless the stock shifter is in
Park or Neutral, you have a mechanical interlock
type, otherwise you have a neutral safety
switch type. If you have a neutral safety
switch, locate the switch and identify the
neutral safety wires (engine will not crank
unless these wires are connected together).
With either type, disconnect battery ground
cable to prevent accidental shorts. If you have
a neutral safety switch, disconnect and extend
both wires from the GM switch to the
switch on the shifter. If you have a mechanical
interlock cut the wire that goes from the start
position on the ignition switch to the solenoid
on the starter. This wire is usually a 10 or 12
gauge purple wire. Run wires from both ends
of the cut wire to the switch on the shifter. Put
slip on terminals on the ends of the lengthened
wire. Crimp terminals onto wires using a
crimping tool or pliers. Connect the wires to
the LOWER switch on the shifter. Identify the
wires for the backup lights and run them to the
UPPER switch on the shifter. Tape terminal
connections and all other connections to prevent
shorts. Reconnect battery ground cable,

Here is the scematic I made up...hopefully it helps. I see the backup. the other stuff is what I am not sure of.

ski your link is bad but i do beleve we have a mechanical verson of this.I beleve it is cable driven from the shifter.Yeas you car has to be in neutral or park to engage the starter.will not work in d or any other gear im goin to got outside to try to play with mine to answer some of the other questions.ill see if i can find a diagram and post it for you.I think the reason they do not make a kit for our car is the mechanical switch.Look for a cable running up to base of steering wheel from the poopieer.I really think its cable if you want to send me the pics i can post them in a matter of seconds on my server.

The key cannot be removed unless the shifter is in park.

The engine will start in either Park or Neutral, but will not crank with the shifter in any gear.

The key will actually turn with the shifter in one of the gears, but the starter will not activate.

The safety interlock is electrical and the little switch is under the shifter boot.
Is that what you're after?

Jake

OK then you confirmed what my memory has been telling me. Sometimes I start second guessing myself, and since my car is apart, its not easy to just run out and check. So we have a mechanical safety.

OK. Now bases on B&M instructions above they sent me. How do I wire up my stock harness which is this diagram here? The backup lights seem pretty straight forward. But not sure about the rest.

Here is the diagram of our stock harness...

Thanks for all your help.

According to Alldata (checked 85 MY should be the same for 89) the gear selector switch (safety switch) is fed by a Yellow wire at pin F, output when in either P or N is via the DARK GRN/WHITE wire.

Power is fed to yellow through the ignition switch in crank position only. The drk grn/white wire feeds through the starter interrupt relay where it comes out purple, the same wire that reaches the starter solenoid.

Disconnect the yellow and drk grn/white from the existing switch and connect them to the lower switch on your shifter (according to BM). It won't matter which terminal gets which wire.

PS the yellow wire also splices to the hatch release relay, should be way before the safety switch, but if you see a splice in their, make sure to cut downstream of it.

Jesse,
Looking at the wiring schematic in my factory manual ----------- your exhisting transmission position switch has a DK GRN/WHT wire running into it from the starter enable relay. It has a PPL wire coming out (from the park and neut. contacts) and goes to the starter solenoid. The instructions for the new shifter have you disconnect the DK GRN /WHT feed wire and the PPL exit wire from the "old" switch and connect them to the "lower" switch on the new shifter. You may have to extend the length of these two wires to do the hook up. The back up light wires go to the "upper" switch on the new shifter. The feed wire to the exhisting transmission position switch is DK BLU and exits as a LT GRN wire (from the "R" contact) and connects to the back up lights. Disconnect these two wires from the "old" exhisting switch and hook them to the "upper" switch on the new shifter.

Found schematics for all years, breaks down to 84-85, 86-88, and 89-92 being similar within the ranges and the ranges being different from one another.

For 89 it's YELLOW/BLK into safety sw. and PURPLE out. Put these on the lower sw of the new shifter and you should be good to go.
(pages 6-32, 33 of Chilton manual)

Sorry for the wealth of misinformation before.
