Default Drve train losses

I have been told that you can expect to see around 15% power loss at the rear wheels in a manual trans car, and an automatic can lose around 20% at the rear wheels.

It seems like most racers prefer the automatic trans. Given the ratios above if two cars of equal power competed against each other, and both drivers were very proficient at driving thier cars the manual trans car would have an advantage over the auto just due to a more efficient drivetrain.

If that is true why do so many people prefer automatics?

Auto's are more consisten, easier to launch with high horsepower cars, and don't ever miss a shift!

automatics do lose more to the drivetrain, but they jump right off the line whereas the manual has the driver and clutch launching problem

for a OEM combo, the manual will usually be faster

When you really pump up the HP, the manual becomes a bitch to launch well, so the automatic gets the 60' better and as such better ET. The driver can also miss a shift with the manual, and the A4 does not.

The amount lost in the drivetrain isnt quite a static percentage either when you get to these high hp numbers.
