I am in the process of replacing the timiing chain on my 86 Vette, and decided that at 101,000 miles I'll go ahead and replace the oil pump as long as I have the oil pan off.
I bought a Mellings oil pump, but I read that the sump piece that goes into the oil (with the screen) is welded to the oil pump.
Should I have bought an oil pump with the sump already installed (welded)? I thought the sump part simply press fits into the hole in the side of the oil pump??? Am I goofy or ????
If you don't have access to a welder or are afraid of damage to pump from welding heat, Jegs has a punp safety retainer. It costs about$8 and bolts to pump and pickup together.

Help...
The part you're referring to is the pickup.
If you decide to have it welded or tack welded, just make sure the guy removed the pressure spring from the pump first so that the heat doesn;t effect the spring tension. It's simple to remove and re-install.
Tacking the pickup is recommended but not absolutely mandatory.

:iagree: But for peace of mind, I always tack the pickup to the pump body. You don't have to have a bead completely around the pickup tube, just enough to insure the pickup doesn't vibrate out of the pump body.
Also, when welding, remove the spring as mentioned above.
Thanks for the replies...I was under the impression that the pickup was already supposed to be welded to the pump. I guess I will get it tack welded...just feel safer. Thanks
