Hey, the illumination behind two of the three digital gauges have gone out. The only one still lit is the tach. This has happened before but they all lit up again when I tapped the plastic sheild. I tried this again but it didn't work. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be and how to solve it? Thanks.
Usually, if you can tap it and it comes back on it's a bad ground. Don't keep tapping it, as it can cause further damage.
If you're a DIY'er, you can take it apart and usually find the culprit if you look hard enough. The power and ground circuits on the cluster's printed circuit board are pretty easy to locate, just trace them and look for any loose/broken contacts.
If you find a problem, and you're not a solderer, you can bring it into a electronics repair facility and they can fix it for you.
there was a great article about fixing your own dash I used to see on the forum. Do a search or post a message asking someone to post the URL.
It tells you how to diagnose most problems with the digital dash, and how to fix them.
A good friend of mine has an 85 that he took off the road at 15,000 miles. He has LOTS of stuff that's like new that he will never use again. If you're interested in a dash, A/C unit and related parts, full intake incl. fuel rails and injectors, ported MAF, rare SLP stainless LT headers and Y pipe etc. etc. let me know and I'll get you in touch with him.
if that dash will work in my 84 i'm game as soon as my flippin tax check gets here if he still has it by then...mine went out and i can't stand it any longer...
