L-98 with 1 pc rear main seal crankshaft have an external balance balancer. Be aware though it is a different external than earlier chevys. It is specific to one piece seal type crank. An 85 L98 has 2 pc crank. It uses the internal style. So much for chevy being interchangeble.

Actually, the 1 piece seal cranks are internal balance on the front half of the crank, and external balance on the rear half of the crank. So you can use a "normal" internal balance dampner.

Right. The add'l weight is on the flex-plate/flywheel and the damper is neutral balance.

thanx guys,im a little confused but i might just build a 383 with a ex bal.400 crank to make it esier. and its a 2 piece rear so i guess it makes it real easy now.
so if i used a 1 piece rear block from a 89 vette and stock internals i'd have to .....use an internal dampner?

Okay, here's the deal.

The stock TPI engine is a hybrid. It has a neutral balance damper (no additional weight added) and a flex-plate WITH additional weight.

If you go with a 400 crank, then the engine becomes externally balanced - meaning weights will be called for on BOTH the damper and the flex-plate UNLESS

You specific to have the crank internally balanced (calling for mallory metal) inwhich case you'd use a neutrally balanced damper and flex-plate/flywheel.

Now when going with a 400 crank and maintaining the EXTERNAL BALANCING, the size of the damper becomes a concern. A 400 calls for a larger diameter damper that the 350 does and this creates a clearance problem at the lower front of the engine.

You'd need an EXTERNAL DAMPER with an OD of 6-3/4" to clear without having to modify the car for the needed clearance.

Hope this helps.

I had my 400 crank internally balanced on the front, using a nuetral balancer

and externally balanced on the rear of the crank with a Balancing plate, stock 85 Flywheel and Centerforce clutch.....

oh yeah,, http://www.dirttrackthunder.com for a fluid damper

Yep, and I'm running stock Chevy 5.7" rods on a 400 crank with TRW pistons that have standard ring spacing (oil ring set NOT in the pin hole). So I guess a little ingenuity goes a long way.
