My windshield has all kinds of little chips in it, it would be nice to polish these out and make it look new again. I saw some kind of polisher compound and pad years ago that you use on a drill (I think). Anyone ever try this and have a good outcome, if so how difficult is it?

I have done mine a couple of times used glas polish from griot's and a sears buffer. it helps but it also depend on how bad the nicks and scratches are. I haven't completely removed all of mine yet.

I'd be afraid to go grinding away on my windshield, but I'm ignorant about the process so it may be safe and I'm just too cautious. Just sounds extreme to me.

About the best you can realistically expect to polish out are fine scratches.
I haven't tried it yet, but have heard that you can clay-bar a windshield and make a big improvement because some of the irregularities are crud stuck in the glass. That would be a good place to start because you want to get any microscopic protrusions off the glass befere you start polishing.

A good rule of thumb is if the scratch can stop your fingernail go over it, you will not be able to remove it. Also be careful with the buffer if you stay in one place to long the heat can actually cause the glass to crack.

We got about 4-5 inches of snow this time, more a few weeks ago here in Greensboro. How about you?
Are you guys using a regular orbital buffer, the same as you use on the paint? I will see if they have any compound at Lowe's first. I just have small scratches on the side window and lots of tiny chips on the windsheild that show when the sun hits them.

Any glass shop will sell you Cerium Oxide to polish glass. Small scratches can be polished out, but pits cannot.
Quite right. I tried to polish out a fairly small scratch on another car with one of those kits and, while it came out, the depression left in the glass distorted the view so much that I'd have been better off with the scratch!
I'm convinced that replacing the windshield is the best solution if the pits and scratches are bothersome.
