Default OBDII scanning questions

I figured I would ask this in the C4 forum since you are more likely to be familiar with the OBD II systems. First, how much is the average cost to take a vehicle to a repair facility to extract and then clear OBD II codes?

Im considering buying a tool so I can do it myself. I currently have two vehicles I could potentially use the scanner on. One is a 2001 Toyota Sienna van and the other is a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Should I get a tool capable of doing both vehicles or whould it be cheaper to buy two vehicle specific scanners? How much money would they cost and does anyone have any recomendations of which one to get? Thanks for the help.

the avg price for having the car coded and cleared is a half-hour labor, more if they have problems. my ecm went out the other day and that was what a chevy dealer told me. not sure of the amounts on the coders for the other cars but i have found you can go to some auto stores and rent them for cheap. autozone had one, however the connector was a different shape.

Jvette,

I use autotap they have the AT1 pro i thinkit is called which I own I can scan all of my OBD-II cars. It is really good for also logging and monitoring the different systems on the car. It is a little pricey, however it has saved me potential boatloads of money...
Most places I have been to charge 65.00 to scan te car..

Mo

If you just want codes run to autozone for free or buy the basic generic blinking light code reader. As a tech I will warn you that over half the time the code shown is the result of a problem not the cause so full data stream is invaluable as is teh knowledge to understand and interpet. My shop will pull codes no testing for 35.00 if you want an actual diagnosis for what caused the codes it jumps to 70 bucks an hour.

Thanks for all the info everyone. The reason I asked was I got the check engine light on my 98 Cherokee. I know exactly why it came on. I should know better, but like a dumbazz I am sometimes I was messin with the fan relay while the engine was running. I pulled it out and plugged it right back in while the engine was runnin. I was trying to make sure it had good connection on the spade contacts. The light came on when I did that. Anyway, after about 10 mins of drivin the check engine light went out after the next restart. I havnt seen it again so I guess thats that. I might have it cleared anyway so it doesnt pull a code during my next emission test. Thanks again for the replies.
