Come on guys. I know some of you installed these particular joints! i think the instructions to grease them were put in the box by mistake but i just wanted to double check
just had some pressed on my 84 (for my 4+3 to ZF swap) my buddy (mechanic) said they are ready to go from the package...he did put some grease around the cap part to ease them in...the ones I have also came with built in grease fittings...
If given the above information alone, I would grease them anyway with quality grease, and wipe off the excess. Do they have a zerk fitting to greae them. Probably not. Then carefully pull cup of needle bearings off, being careful no to loose any and and insert grease, replace cap. By the way, where did you get them and how much did they cost. (even in canadian$ or US $). I am needing U joints also for my current Dana 44 project in the garage. Tks for any info you can provide
My semi-educated guess is that if the U-joints have zerk fitings, they are intended to be lubed by you. If they don't have zerk fittings, the factory likes to lube them to be sure it's the right amount of the right long life grease.
Re: do i grease these u-joints or what? (corvette1990)
corvette1990, I purchased them from "traction" which is an associate of UAP/NAPA
they deal with 18-wheeler parts almost exclusively, but also carry a few truck parts, inluding some of the lighter duty spicer joints
Traction is probably the best place to get them aside from Tom's differentials. GM wants about $80CAN a joint, Traction has them listed for about half that, and i paid even less because of my employee discount. :)
No they do not have grease fittings - several forum members led me to believe that joints with grease fittings are prone to breaking in corvettes
the joints i purchased are coated for aluminum and cold forged - aparantly the strongest joint for out application
These are supposedly pre-greased (one of the notes specifically states "do not add lubrication - addition of lubricant may damage bearing cup seals leading to premature joint failiure"
