Default 700R4 experts needed please

ok here's my problem. under normal driving conditions, the tranny shifts perfect. but under WOT, it will not shift out of first gear. it does this when i take off at WOT (such as the track) and it also does it when i'm coasting in second and get it to downshift into 1st. it pulls good to about 5000-5200 rpm's and then it's like it's in neutral. the rpms climb fast but you don't go any faster. to get it to shift i have to let off the pedal slightly, and then about 1-2 secs later it'll finally shift into second.

i know this problem has been posted before, i've saw people on the forum give 3 reasons for this:
1) TV cable needs adjusting. i've adjusted it a hundred times, and besides i've read that the TV cable has nothing to do with WOT shifts, only part throttle. so that rules that out.
2) the car gets to the rev limiter before it can shift into second because the shift point and rev limiter are only a couple hundred rpm's apart. this isn't my problem as i've got a re-programmed chip with no rev limiter.
3) the springs in the govenor are worn out and the B&M governor weight/spring re-calibration kit will fix it. well i've talked to several tranny shops and they told me that could fix it but doubt it. they said the likely reason is because it was an early 700R4 (my vette is an 86 model) and that some of them just won't shift out of first at WOT. two shops talked like this is a common problem with them.

i'm getting a transgo shift kit professionally installed in a couple weeks. do u think this might fix it? which kit should i go with? i use my car as a daily driver and drag race it every other weekend. one tranny shop said they would install their own custom shift kit (their getting it patented now) that would guarantee the fastest possible shifts. they had done it to the shop owner's stock chevy 2500 full size pick up and it supposedly will leave 10ft+ long black marks on the 2-3 shift  now that might be a little too hard for a daily driver as i've heard that on 700's they shift harder at part throttle than WOT. i don't think putting that much stress on the drive train/u-joints/etc. would be too good everyday. but i wander if this would solve my no 1-2 WOT shift problem?

i have to get this fixed before i start racing this season. last year i acidentally hit 6500 rpm before the car finally shifted  scared me to death. plus i'm losing at least .3-.4 tenths in the 1/8 if not more :mad

MIne does the same thing...I have to let off lightly for it to shift. Sometimes scary. I rebuilt my 700r4 last year but it did it before that also. I made all the upgrades and adjustment and nothing helped it. I think it is just a trait.
I also installed a transgo shift kit and I love it. There is three different levels you can make it from soft to very firm. If you don't have patience, I would pay someone to do it but just cautious who you use. Make sure you trust the people! Good luck!

P.S. what part of town are you from?

I'm by no means a 700R4 expert, but I'm thinking if the car isn't shifting out of first at WOT it is not normal. There is definitly some type of problem somewhere, wether it be with the trans, TV cable or something else.

I feel your pain. I have or I should say had the same problem. I spent more time and money then I would like to remember trying to figure it out. I did the TranGo, the Performance govenor, B&M shift springs and still the same problem. All the hop ups I did diffentely improved the trany but it still didnt solve the problem.

So I finally gave up and just finish a ZF 6 speed swap :D

If anyone is interested I have a 700R freshley rebuilt with a B&M 2400 stall, TransGo shift kit and a Performance govenor trany for sale.

i don't think it's a trait as my 85 has never had this problem. Sorry i can't be of more help, but it's not normal.

That's not true. If I set my slider all the way in the adjust bracket I can get it to shift at 5600 rpm's @ WOT. If I pull it all the way out I can get it shift through every gear before the 1/8 mile marker @ WOT.

i don't think it's a trait as my 85 has never had this problem. Sorry i can't be of more help, but it's not normal.

:iagree: also. Supposedly most of the kinks were worked out by '87 but I've never ran across this problem. I vote for something is wrong.

I've never had that with my '84, which is of course earlier. I'm voting for a governor problem. Maybe a broke spring, a weight that has broken or become dislodged? A blockage in a governor hydraulic circuit? I would get to the bottom of the problem BEFORE the shift kit. If the kit makes the problem go away, it is more likely it has masked the problem, not cured it. Left uncured, could bring more problems, later. Good luck, and...

RACE ON!!!
