Default Does anyone have any comments on "Precision Engine"?

This is their website: http://www.precisionengine.com They advertise a rebuilt long block for '87 to '91 for $865 (plus core charge). Seems almost too cheap to be true, but I'm interested anyway.

I have visited their shop in Houston. They gave me a full tour of the shop. Seems to be very professional. I know someone who had a 383 stroker built by them. He lives out of town, but I have not heard any negative comments from him.

I've looked at them before too. The warranty looks good...12 months unlimited miles.

But you're right....the price almost seems TOO low.

When you consider that they have to compete with crate motors, and also that they are rebuilding an engine, not supplying a new one, you are basically getting charged to clean up your block, install new bearings, rings and reassemble. They seem to be a high volume shop, they are set up to turn around a lot of engines. And this is a bench job, they are not R & R the engine for this cost.

Expecting no performance gain, if they check tolerances, keep things clean, use good parts, not a bad option. Most guys can't measure valve guide wear, rod side play, bearing crush, lack cam bearing install kit, cylinder bore gauge, lots of little things that can make a big difference. I usually overhaul my own engines BUT, if I was in a hurry, I'd consider this option.

Do you know if they return the same block if one pays more? Just curious.

Worth considering.

I was looking at the "quality" tab on their website. It looks like they do a pretty thorough job. Here is the details of their assembly process:

Cores are inspected and completely dissembled.
Major components, such as engine blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, connecting rods and camshaft are retained for remanufacturing - most other internal components are scraped.
The engine block, cylinder head and crankshaft are cleaned in an environmentally friendly Thermo Cleaning System.
All blocks and heads undergo a thorough crack inspection process.
The block cylinders are bored to the first available oversize, with sleeves installed as needed.
Most block deck surfaces' are milled to provide for both straightness and a proper surface for gasket retention.
Engines are then diamond honed using a computerized hone.
The blocks then go through a 3 step cleaning process.
All new cam bearings, oil galley plugs, freeze plugs and cam plugs are installed.
Reground or new camshafts are installed.
A remanufactured crankshaft is installed with new bearings; rear seal and main caps are torqued to original equipment manufacturer's specifications.
The remanufactured connecting rod is installed with the new pistons, rings and bearings, again torqued to original equipment manufacturer's specifications.
All long blocks have the heads torqued to original equipment manufacturer's specifications. After assemble, the engine is tested on a Sims Spin Tester to verify oil flow and compression.

Thanks, guys....very good question on returning the same block; I had not thought of them reassembling mine. I, too, looked at their process, and liked what I read. Then again, I'm very gullible, so not a good judge.

I need what they supply at the price they supply, so I'll probably go for it. I wanted a stock rebuild, anyway. I'm a good month away from ordering it - muchclean up to do on the engine bay, and the other parts I removed. I will let you know how it goes.

I would NOT go with those jacka**es!!! :mad

Yeah, they quote you $895... THEN when they get your car or engine, it's, "Oh, the phone guy didn't know you had a Vette. THAT is a high-precision engine, and requires extra work. Oh, by the way, that will now cost you $3500..."

I had a nightmare experience with them. IMO I think they are crooks. Go with someone else.

Hmmmmm....this is directly off their price list on the website..

3842 '87-'91 "VETTE" 350 ALUM. HEAD 864.95 764.95
CF3830 '82-'84 "VETTE" 350 CROSS-FIRE 899.95 799.95

Looks like the factored the "precision" part into the price already. And a L83 or L98 is simply a 350 SBC pushrod engine....I don't think anyone would call it precision. Maybe you just got a hold of a dumbbutt on the phone.
