Default HELP.............4+3 Problem

My brother-in-law has had a 1984 with the 4+3 for a long time. Recently, when he's trying to backup, something slips but catches enought to get it to backup. In the forward gears, everything seems fine including the clutch and O/D operation.

Evidently, there's a wet clutch pack involved with the O/D but I wouldn't think that would have any involvement backing up. Is there a splined shaft or coupler that could be worn out that is only under load in reverse?

These transmissions seem to have a lot of issues but what could this be?

Thanks for any suggestions.

check the linkage first, or it can be the direct cluthes in the OD unit. How many miles on the unit, the 84 OD unit had some upgrades done to it over time, frt. bearing and the direct clutch thrust washer.

Could be carrier bearing on way out especially since it is a early O/d with all the factory faults.

Check this site for excellent info ;www.5speeds.com/nash.htm

This page especially.www.5speeds.com/carrier.htm

Hi.
I have an 85 4+3.
I had the same symptoms. When I had it in reverse it slipped and everything was normal in forward gears. For me it was the bearing. I changed to a new and later version of the OD. It was very difficult to get spareparts Now it is super.
Before the bearing became bad there was a slight noise from the OD. The bearing was rotating and it had destroyed the wall in the OD.

If I understand the replies, it could be either worn clutch plates or the carrier bearing. I assume both require a tear down and rebuild of the O/D unit. Does that require any special tools or can you do it with tools from Craftsman?

By the way, thanks for the feedback above.

You need to get the service manual to disasemble it, you can fabricte some simple tools to compresss the clutch plate springs for disassembly and reassembly etc. but you really need a service manual. You have some clearences to check, need to time the pinion gears etc. you can do it yourself but you MUST have the manual. You could put it together without the book but it would be a mistake.
Right now you have burned clutch plates in the OD section, you have good forward operation because your driving power through the sprag, which is a one way clutch. Soft parts are avialble but some hard parts may be difficult to get. Bearings wont be much of a problem, i was able to get all I needed from a bearing supply house...
