4+3 Shifter Rebuild
Thanks for the valuable info with the 4+3 DN shifter. I as well like the trans, my shifter must be the culprit. To repeat a previous post of mine, 2 years ago I removed the top council area and cleaned the top of the shifter up and lubed it. The problem was fixed until someone else drove the car at a tire shop. I don't know what they did, but now I am having trouble finding first gear once again. The shifter seems to work well except for this. It moves too far to the left in the neutral gate which adds to the confusion of finding first gear in a timely fashion.
From looks at the shifter, it looks like the alignment tool is shaped like a hacksaw blade. I can't imagine using a 3/16 drill bit as a lot have said to do???
I am trying to avoid taking out the driver's seat, carpet and tunnel cover if I don't have to, but it is starting to look like I may have to. Also a trans shop alerted me of mechanical type switches that have a spring in them. They are located under the linkage bars and, if gummed up will keep the car from shifting properly. Unscrewing them and cleaning the spring is all it takes.(usually)... Only 1985 used these and that's what mine is. I am kind of hoping the problem cures on it's own. LOL
