I took this off my car, following some weak directions, and i just want to make sure this is what I should be cleaning. plus, does this one look dirty enough to cause a higher than normal idle? It looks pretty dirty to me...
I would use TB cleaner, did you pull the TB to get at the IAC ?
I just replaced the IAC in my 92, make sure you check the pintle distance (no more than 1 1/8") before you reinstall and the follow the reset procedure.
i didnt pull the tb, and it was a PITA to get that bottom screw in. what does the pintle distance have to do with anything? I just took it out, promptly lost the o-ring, cleaned it (w/o any cleaner), and re-installed it, with an o-ring i had to hike to the store to get one :mad it isnt quite working proper tho, it idles at 900 some times, but other times, its still at 1500. not really sure why. Maybe its wore out.
There is a procedure, trust me I know. I just replaced mine with a new one and then had cold start and low idle issues. This morning I pulled tyhe TB again and followed the correct procedure and she runs like new again.

2 steps:
- Replacement / cleaning Procedure
- Adjustment Procedure
Let me know if you dont have a service manual and I'll track them down and post them.
Disconnect electrical connector
Remove IAC valve assembly and gasket, discard gasket Clean and Inspect
Clean IAC valve gasket sealing surface, pintle valve seat and air passage
Use carburetor cleaner to remove carbon deposits. Do not use a cleaner that contains methyl ethyl ketone, an extremely strong solvent, and not necessary for this type of deposit.
Shiny spots on the pintle or seat are normal, and do not indicate misalignment or a bent pintle shaft.
Install or Connect:
If installing a new IAC valve, measure distance between pintle and mounting surface. If greater than 28mm, use finger pressure to slowly retract the pintle.
Install and tighten IAC valve
Torque Value: 18 N-m (13 lb.ft.)
Depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Start and run the engine for five seconds.
Turn the ignition OFF for ten seconds.
Restart the engine and check for proper idle operation.
Mine took a bit of driving around and a few restarts to behave properly.
