My car started giving me some trouble at the end of last summer, and since I'm getting ready to take it out in a few months I figured now would be a good time to get some advice on how to fix them.
I have a '92 Automatic...
Problem #1: It runs hot.
- When I first got my car 3 years ago it ran about 180 degrees. By the end of last summer it was running at about 205. I'm assuming my radiator just needs to be cleaned... which I can probably do myself. But I thought I'd check to see if anyone has any other possibilities I should look in to.
Problem #2: It "sputters" on idle
- When I stop at a stop sign or I'm forced to idle at low speeds through a town my car runs REALLY rough. I'm afraid it will stall sometimes. It runs fabulous once the speed is up to 25 or 30 mph and above. I'm assuming there is some sort of fuel delivery problem, but I don't kwow what to check or where to take it.
Problem #3: Anti-lock and ASR lights come on
- I changed my brake pads last year, so that might have something to do with this as the problem began shortly thereafter. If I stop suddenly or hit a large bump while driving, my "Service ASR" and "Service ABS" lights come on and these features stop working. (I still have brakes, just not Anti-Lock) After I turn the car off and back on they are back (until I stop suddenly or hit a bump again) I don't know what this could be or where to take it to get it looked at.
If someone could give me some advice on how to go about fixing these issues and an estimate of costs that may be associated I'd be VERY greatful!!! Thanks!
on your overheating problem, there may be leaves trapped between your radiator which stops air from flowing through your raidator efficiently. Also check your thermostat. The mercury might have degraded and it is opening later than it used to. Im trying to go for the cheap fixes :) You also just might be driving in warmer weather. engine coolant is almost directly purportional to outside air tempurature. A ten degree hike in the temp may mean a ten degree hike in your engine temp.
The idle may mean a Idle Air Control, Throttle body, Mass air flow sensor cleaning. Spring Cleaning :) On your 92 though I am not seasoned with this so maybe someone who is will chime in.
On the ASR I am clueless.... :conehead Hope this helps
On the idle problem, I would start with a thorough cleaning on the throttle body , followed by setting the minimum idle speed and TPs voltage set up. All of these proceedured are spelled out very well in the tips section under tools Above). Cleaning of the TB is a regular maintenance item that needs doing periodically. A dirty TB is the most common reason for idle problems. Unless you have bad plugs or wires these things should fix it. Any way , it's something that needs doing regardless. It's a good weekend project and relatively easy to do as corvette work goes.
I can't help with the ABS problem. I haven't seen many on the forum that seem to know a lot about this system but maybe someone can give it a try. Good Luck.
