Playing around with power windows
A couple days ago I felt like taking stuff apart and took a look at the power window mechanisms. My passenger side window tends to only lower a few inches and stop. I have to wait a minute and it will lower again. Don't know much about power windows but I took it apart anyway, and sprayed lubricant on all the moving parts. I noticed that the black wiper part(most of which is cracked and falling apart) tends to crack and fall inside the door and get lodged in the teeth of the mechanism.
Interestingly, each window has a different mechanism. The drivers side has a scissors-type mechanism while the passenger side has a ribbon type mechanism. The power window seems to work better the more I use it. Maybe lack of use is the culprit. :U

You must have an early 86'...84' to E86 had the ribbon type.I know..I just upgraded my RH side..Works great. Someone obviously upgraded your drivers side.Let me know..I have explicit instructions for the upgrade.if anyone wants it.

Take a look on the bottom of your passenger door. In mid-'86, they switched over to scissor-type regulators (faster and more reliable) from the earlier ribbon type. The scissors type requires two holes drilled in the bottom of the door, and a switching of two wires. However, most early 86's already have those two holes drilled in the bottom of the door. Mine does, and many other 86'ers I've talked to. So they were planning on switching to the new regulators, they apparently were using up the old stock first. I bought one scissor-style replacement regulator off eBay, I bought the 2nd one from Superior Chevrolet (CF'ers source for discount vette parts). I haven't put them in yet, but that's finally on this spring's list.
I have an 86E also....the early regulators are junk.....What was interesting was that I had to reverse the wires on the right side to make it work right, then when I put the driver's side one in the polarity was correct....Go figure, the two units came from different sources, I don't know.... what I do know is that I would NEVER waste my time putting the tapeworm regs back in anything...The scissor types are great!!!!! :auto: And...for what it's worth,If you remove the targa top it's a lot easier to work inside the doors...

If the motor is drawing too much current, it'll open the fuse. I forget what kind of fuses they're called, but they open up on overload then reset and close when they cool.
