was looking at mine last night and saw alot of little cracks, so i guess its time to replace it, do we have a favorite brand of belt we all like to go with?, and does anybody know the parts number for a 90 l98 vert serpentine belt with everything under the hood ? TIA you guys are the greatest !
According to my service manual ('93 LT-1), the cracks are fine - you don't have to replace. However, if there are sections of ribs missing, then it calls for replacement.
I looked this up recently because I noticed the same thing on my belt...
Depends on how many cracks there are, and how deep are they. How dried out is the belt? How many miles? I change mine every 60K. Belts are pretty cheap, and its better than getting stranded. I like Goodyear myself. The ribs have grooves in them for better flexibilty, less prone to cracking.

Hmmm... The service manual didn't say anything about how many or how deep the cracks should or shouldn't be - nor how to measure the dryness of the belt for that matter. :p:
I agree, they're pretty cheap and if in doubt should be replaced prior to a failure. I was simply pointing out that the cracks in and of themselves do not indicate a failing belt... :)
Once in a while I'll get my oil, lube and filter at the idiot's oil change joint. They always want to replace the belt because it's cracked, or they want want to do the engine oil flush, or the trans, or the coolant. That's where they make their money. I bet if I changed my belt with them 3K miles ago they'd tell me I'd need another one. But they always check the computer to see if they did do one recently. They are such a rip off. Ok Ok, I'll stop now. I change my belts and hoses around every 30K miles and use NAPA parts.
If it has cracks across it, change it. As most have said, they don't cost much. I got mine from the dealer. Changing them is not hard, just not a lot of space to work in.
Just replaced mine today with a gatorback had the dayco but opted for the gatorback it looks like a better constructed belt. Loop under crank first from top put it place from under front of car . went on without a problem looks to be a little shorter than the dayco and idler is more stable less bouncing then when i put the dayco on 6 mos ago also the dayco started to shred one side after 20k in 6 mos . we will see how the gatorback holds up. The goodyear looks like a better belt.
