i always used 93 or 94 octane in my cars and yes you can bump the timing up, but i always thought that the higher octane is better for keeping injectors clean and so on??? i remember years ago i used 87 and the car or work truck would ping then i used 93-94 no more ping.
Okay, REALLY dumb question here. If the manual for my '93 says to use 91 octane (I can only assume that the 10.5:1 comp. ratio is the rationale here), should I even attempt something lesser? Will I actually hurt anything ?
I don't think it is a gimmick. The federal government would not allow it and it does strictly regulate fuel ratings. For example, if the EPA comes out and checks the fuel tanks at a gas station and the octane level is not as advertised they can be fined. i.e. 87 octane sold as 92 octane

:iagree: But, they also take YEARS to check the pumps, as there are millions, the ones around here haven't been checked since like the 60s or sometime around then (so says my friend at the gas station) :jester
i agree. here in ny 93 is up to $2.10 gallon and they said it will go up $1.00 more by summer. :iagree:
I'm here with ya, 6spd. Gas prices here suck. I went to Jersey a few weeks ago (To triler my new vette home, actually :D ) and super-duper was like $1.79 there. Reg was about $1.47 if I remember correctly. Obviously I filled up in jersey. They relly jerk us out here on the island......
Oil has to be like the biggest racket ever! If someone sneezes in Saudi Arabia, gas prices go up at least .10! What's up with that? There always seems to be something convenient (albeit usually only superficially relevant) to blame for the rising cost of gas, and as long as we are willing to pay the price, the gas will continue to get more expensive. Ain't capitalism grand?

Yes! Capitalism is GRAND :smash:although we are moving further from it every day here, and there are some unpleasantries associated with it. Our gas is, however consistantly MUCH cheaper than it is in the rest of the world by
A LOT. And it would be cheaper yet if the God damn people we ellect would quit stealing and wasting our money
