----- rear end Clunck-----------
I have noticed that when I drive in "D" I get a clunck,,,that sounds like it is coming from the rear end,,, i have replaced all of the u-joints within the last 4 months, I have changed the rear end fluid within the last 4 months..
Last night i put the rear-end on stands to check the gearing,," for those that have been following my 3000rpms at 80 MPH,,,, the drive-shaft turned 3 1/2 times for a full rotation of the tire,,, not sure either 3.45's or 3.54's  "
anyways I turned the tire back and forth really quick,,, it sounds like the noise is coming from the rear end yolk :nonod:
whats up with that,,,,,, is this a bad thing????????????????? :smash:

I just answered your IM, and when I hit "send", it gave me an error message. If you didn't get it, all it said was that I am in the middle of typing this. From what I remember from your last series of posts, you were getting erratic readings from your tach. I think you will have to address that on it's own.
On the clunk. A certain amount of play is acceptable. I would put the car on jack stands (again) and check for excessive play, at every possible spot along the drive train. My very first guess is in the differential internals. I don't mean the ring and pinion (which IS a possibility), but inside the diff case where the posi is. If you find excessive play at the pinion yoke, check again and see if a very small amount of movement produces a faint "click". That will be the normal backlash in the ring and pinion. Without better feedback, that is my first, best, guess. Good luck, and...

You are not going to want to hear this, but it is the center pin in the carrier. It is very common for this to wear on a D36. Unfortunalty there is no fix except to replace it.

THAT is one of the possible problems, I was leading up to. Have you isolated the play? To replace the pin, only, you have to drop the diff. Remove the batwing, and pull the pin and replace. However, if the pin is bad, it has probably wallered out the case. The case is the item the ring gear bolts to and contains the posi unit. To pull the case, you have to remove the four cap bolts and pull out the diff case. Check the ring and pinion back lash, first, because you will want to verify it is the same upon reassembly. Enough?

I have the Dana44 on my 4+3, and I have the same symptoms. Starting from a stop... basically everytime it starts moving and takes up slack in the drivetrain. Does it really bad in reverse.

I had one when starting to accelerate and decelerate. I anti-seized the spindle and torqued the spindle nut to 200 and it went away. If the search was working, you could see all the possible answers. As already mentioned, check the C Beam too.

Re: ----- rear end Clunck----------- (Aaron's 87)
I am going to have to do a little more research ,, to be very sure that this is the problemm,,,, because reading you guys post,, doesnt sound the same as my clunck,,,, Mine doesnt do it all the time it only does it when i am in drive and it is dowshifting from drive to second,,,,, then again this could be early symptoms of what you all are experiencing..... Man I really dont want to drop that entire rear end,,,,, that sounds like a JOB....
One last question do you all get a vibration at HWY speeds???? I dont...... FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCC KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Absolutely, I just fixed my "Clunk" noises this morning that excat same way. One of the rear spinle nuts was not torque all the way. The anti-sieze in the spindle splines took care of the "Clicking" The torqued spindle nut took care of the "Clunk" that I got when I would come to a stop below 10MPH and when accelarating back up to 10MPH.
