The last shop that took it off apparently stripped the threads on one of the front holes. I had to cut the bolt off. It looked to me like there was some kind of nut inside the frame. It came loose and fell back into the frame. How are those threads attached to the frame? The frame is boxed there. How am I going to screw in a new bolt there? anyone run into this? Thanks
Sounds like a weld nut. A flat square piece of metal that is drilled, tapped and welded in place. If you cross thread into one and try to force the bolt in anyway, the weld usually brakes and your screwed.
The above post refers to a nutsert, good idea. It is essentially a threaded rivet. You stick it through the hole, using a tool it is then pulled making it expand like a rivet. And your left with basically a threaded hole.
Not sure where to get them, they have always been included as part of a kit (very popualr for roof racks).
I'll try to find a "nutsert". I am concerned because the x brace does come off a lot and I need to be able to R&R it. Once the rivet is in, how do you hold it steady to undo the bolt?
Mine comes off frequently too. I bought some "all thread rod" and made up studs for each of the attachment points. I used Loc-Tite (they have a very stong one for studs) to put them in. Now, I just loosen a nut & lockwasher - no stress on the nutserts (rear) and welded nuts (front). Good luck. Paul :flag
Putting the threaded rod in there is a great idea. I'll probably do that too. However, I gotta figure out how to fix the missing welded nut. Anyone have a source for the "nutsert"?
