I have been noticing that my coolant temp has been getting pretty high when I'm driving for a long period of time. I have a 1996 Lt1. What temperature zone should the coolant be at when it tops out on the freeway?
Thanks
On the highway, normal for a stock engine is anywhere from 190-210 depending on conditions(like a car in front of you, or just the open road) sitting in traffic, you will see temps as high as 230-235, I usually just flip on the A/C and watch the temp drop.
Both fans come on automatically when the a/c is turned?? I can not hear the fans due to my exhaust. I just hope the temp starts dropping when it hits 231, and it does. I have never sat in traffic with the a/c on.
Thanks

Affirmative, Russ... The a/c system has a separate fan relay due to the fact that a/c needs constant fan operation for proper Refrigerant Condensing. Both fans; not sure. Definitely one though. I once had an '84 trans-am that had a bad realy/sensor, or something, and out of plain laziness diconnected the non-working a/c compressor and left the climate selector set to max a/c so the fan would run at all times...lol. A quick tip in case of overheating due to a bad fan relay or sensor in the middle of nowhere; unplug compressor, max A/C, (analog control set to warm helps even more....pre 87). Hopefully my running on here was somewhat of help to you...
My 86 runs 172-183 degrees crusing on the freeway. In traffic and arround town, it stays between 185 and 200 degrees no matter how hot the outside temperature. :D :D I have a 170 degree thermostat with 4 holes, a low temp fan switch, and run a fresh 70% coolant/ 30% water mixture. Be sure you purge all air bubbles that may be in your cooling system.
Thanks a lot for the info. After reading this I realize that I am within safe limits. It just freaked me out one day when i saw it get into the 230's. I don't tend to drive with my ac on, so that explaines the delay. Sone of you mentioned low cooling thermostats. So do the 160 degree thermostats make the engine fan come on at 160 instead of 230? Thanks for the info

The thermostat just opens at the adverised temperature to allow coolant to circulate throught the cooling system. It does nothing about your fans.
The low temp fan switch is what turns your fans on early. This one for example, turns your fans on at 200 degrees and off at 185 degrees. They work great in traffic. The stock switch turns your fans on at about 230-240 degrees. Click on the link below. http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=3.944
