I have a co-worker with a '92. Shop guy fixing the infamous oil leak says it should have a tuneup. He's estimating $900 for parts and service. (there was no indication anything was wrong with the OptiSpark, so the estimate likely isn't covering replacing that).
This sounds high to me. What would be a reasonable price on a '92?
that is a major league rip off. I hope he is getting vasoline to go with it. anything to ease the pain.
It takes a few hours to do a tune up on an LT1, but gee... not $900.00 worth of hours.
I wonder if he is suggesting a new cap and rotor, which, is nothing more than a rip off... a new cap and rotor is about 150.00 in parts, and the same labour to replace them as to replace the entire opti.
it's this type of potentially unethical behaviour that makes me not want to take my car to someone else for service... :mad
That's what I thought, but I'm just an L98'er. He replaced the intake manifold gaskets for I think $400, and according to the owner, seemed to know what he was doing vs. the mechanic he previously paid to solve the oil leak. This guy quoted the $900 saying it's cheaper to do it now while the engine is still disassembled. I advised to take the car back now, and see how well the oil leak was fixed (and give him time to get other estimates).
Well said. But I've spent so much on my '86 I don't know what's reasonable anymore. I do know I'd like to throttle a number of servicepeople and dealers I've met over the years.
