I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I want to cut my air lid, I have some of it apart right now and it's gonna get dark in like an hour...but anyway I unscrewed the 3 bolts that holds the cover and the air filter on, and I saw the shroud on top of it (which is riveted on I guess) and then theres the lid under it, then the filter. So correct me if I'm wrong, but I want to remove the shroud completely (drill out the rivets), then cut a bigger square hole in the lid, and file it down and whatever, then put it back on, and is the filter goi ng to end up completely exposed to the open?
This is my understanding of it, I wanted to make sure just because once you start cuttin you can't go back :) and I don't wanna have to buy another air lid if i screw up. anyway, help me out please!
I had to drill out the rivets on my 95 to remove the top cover; all you have to do then is cut out the louver section. I used a jig saw with a hack saw blade; it cuts through it like butter. Scribe some straight lines first to cut along, and then finish off the edges with a metal file. Make sure you secure the lid before you start cutting or it will jump around on you. Hope this helps.
Don't cut away to much or you won't be able to secure the filter, the picture in the post above gives you a pretty good idea of what it should look like when your finished.

I have a 94 LT1 coupe.
ok I drilled the rivets out and took the top cover thing off. I think it's a splash guard, I maybe shouldn't have removed it cuz I gotta drove in the rain too (california though, shouldn't be that bad). But I'm thinking it might be different from yours Kizmo, mine didn't have any louvers on it, it had these two dome shaped things leading off to the left and right sides, and it sucked air in from there, then it made its way into the inner lid, which had a little rectangle where it sucked in air, then behind that is the filter. But yeah the splash guard is off but I didn't have time to cut the lid. thanks for the replies guys. let me know what you think about the splash guard thing though, if I should leave that on or not... thanks.

Click on the site below, if your cover does not look like the one here after you removed the piece held on by the rivets I'm sure what you have. It may be an after market lid.
very weird, mine doesn't look much like any of those at all. no louvers anywhere, the shroud makes it so it takes in air from the sides, then the lid is like a 5x8 inch opening for air to go in. oh well. Thank you for the replies everyone :)
