On Friday, I'll be ordering a rear Y-Pipe and muffler eliminators! :D
This will be my first upgrade on my recently purchased stock 86 coupe. I want to put together a small game plan for a decent exhaust. What other EXHAUST enhancements would you all recomend to go along with rear y and muff elims? Nothing too crazy, I wont be doing too many intense mods or upgrades in the future, just little things here and there. Interested on seeing if any recomendations on good hi-flo cats and other tips and tricks.
On the inexpensive side, you can replace your front y-pipe that has those pre-cats with one from an 85. It will bolt right up and the 85 pipe does not have pre-cats like in 86. I got a good used one used from Pacific Corvette for $40. I only use this pipe for my bi-annual emissions testing to pass "visual".
If you can swing the cost, and your town requires no emmisions testing, some long tube headers from Hooker or TPIS, along with a hi- flow cat.
BTW I would not do headers with muffler eliminators. Headers really up decibal of the exhaust. I can't imagine driving around with any mufflers with headers (any yes I have a main cat)
I like the idea of front y-pipe from 85 with no pre-cats. I sent an email to Pacific Corvettes and waiting on reply. Will this front y make exhaust too loud with muff elims?????

It really depends on what you personally consider beeing "loud" I can't give you a real answer, I have Flowmasters. I do not think that going from a y-pipe with pre-cat to one without will make a huge difference in "lousness". Hope someone with Eliminators can chime in.

85 won't bolt to anything since 86 is a slip fit. A stock 85 y-pipe will not work.

I have Hooker Super Comp #2149 Headers with Dual Mandrel Bent 2.5", with a 3" X-pipe section, without any sort of mufflers, and it's not loud enough!
As good as a deal as the Hedman headers sounded like ($175 shipped), I choose to take your advice and stay away from them, I have always respected your opinoin and knowledge. Thanks! I'll just wait for a good deal on some Hooker headers and do it right the first time!!!!!

Did you put the 85 y-pipe on your 86? I got some feedback saying the 85 wouldn't work on an 86.
They are right, I am incorrect, sorry.
I went to the Mid-America site and they sell their front y-pipes as follows:
84-85
86-91
They are indeed different. Thanks for the correction fellas.
This means that Pacific Corvette accidentaly told me it was from an 85.

I was wrong. Sorry for the confusion. But you can still get one for your Vette without the pre-cats. I got one like this used from Pacific Corvette in good condition for $40. Just ask for an 86-91 pipe. Take a look. http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=3.36.971
Good choice as your first upgrade.
You don't need any fancy, expensive mufflers. Let it breathe with the eliminators and the sound is so sweet when you nail it but cruisin' it's real calm. The cats muffle enough.
As has been mentioned, check out Hedman long-tubes. $172.00 if you don't care about the AIR stuff. Get some stainless steel header paint from Eastwood. Keeps the underhood cooler. IMO, don't waste your money on ceramic coating. It won't get you 1HP more.
I've used Hedman headers on my first car at 16, a '57 Chevy and every Chevy since then. The only thing that's a little chinsey about them is the thickness of the plate between the pipes. But double gaskets keep them from leaking. Also they don't tuck up as tight as some other high-dollar brands of headers. But they do make the HP! I cut the AIR tubes off my stock exhaust and welded them to the headers. Saved some serious cash over buying the "certified" ones. I had to weld a nut on for the O2 as well.
We'll assume you have the K&N, open lid, etc. The next step is a little work but you can bank another 50HP or so. Get rid of that wimpy stock cam and you won't regret it. I have the mildest cam CompCam makes for my '87 (501-8) and according to my Desktop Dyno 2000 software, I gained 50HP!
If you need to do this is steps, start by replacing the runners with some good aftermarket pieces. Maybe a 52mm TB. If you have the dreaded "fall on it's face" syndrome (in first, the RPM hits about 4900 or so then it just won't go anymore and it struggles to up-shift) then the new runners will help. IMO, it's one of the big bottle-necks in the intake system. Don't forget the adjustable fuel pressure regulator with that new cam.
If you do the above, you should be making over 300HP and tons of tire-smokin' torque.
Look for the cut-back plug trick on this forum and gain another 10HP, or so it's been said.
jvet, since you are going to do headers (soon) along with rear Y, also change to a hi-flow cat to finish off the exhaust package. Check out Summit's pricing on hi-flow cats or just get a Random Tech cat from TPIS.
Also, install a 160deg stat with matching aux fan switch to get coolant temps down for a nice power gain. Use my C4 Tech Tip to wire the aux fan switch to control the main fan too.
You could also advance the TPS base idle (450RPM) voltage to .65 Vdc (details on my site) and advance base timing a little to improve throttle response and low end torque.
