I have a high pitch whine in the drive train (not engine) which occurs:
1. Only above about 52mph
2. In 6th, 5th, 4th gears (3rd maybe, engine is too loud to hear)
3. At various rpm's (1300-2000 in 6th, over 2000 in 5th, over 3000 in 4th)
4. never when the clutch is in at any speed
Can this be something easy like a speedo cable? Or is it a diff. bearing?
I have had this for a long time now. Keep putting off taking apart the diff. just for this.
Its tough to say without hearing it, it could really be anything. The rule is that a "speed dependant" whine is usually in the rearend or tailshaft of the trans. You didnt mention the year of your car, but I doubt you have a speedo cable (did nay C4's?). If its a wheel bearing the noise should change if you swerve side to side sharply due to loading and unloading the bearings.
