Default Hot Cam -vs- Comp cam

I was hoping that someone could run the numbers and tell me how these cams differ in horsepower and torque on an LT1(350) with ported heads and all the other goodies.

Hot Cam>218/228 .525 .525 w/ 1.6rr and .558/.558 w/1.7rr 112 lsa
Comp >224/230 .503 .510 w/ 1.5rr and .536/.544 w/1.6rr 112 lsa

I believe that both specs are for a cam installed at 108 ICL. I realize that these cams are different and I am not concerned with price or anything like that because I own both cams. Just curious as to the numbers. I have head flow numbers as well if needed. Is anyone else curious? I know there is alot of 224/230 cams out there.

The comp is going to produce more peak hp as it has more lift w/the same rr's (1.6) and more duration. It will be lopier though.

What are the advertised durations of both cams and at what tappet lift was is obtained?

If you have the specific lobe numbers of the CompCams, post it too.

What series is the CompCams, looks like an Xtreme Energy series, right?

Jake

I debated those exact two cams. As you can see from my signature, I chose #2 for my 383. Haven't started it up yet though.

I don't have a card on the Hot cam. Maybe someone can furish those spec. Comp cam is as follows:
xtreme energy hydraulic roller
.006 276 281
int 30btdc 66 abdc
ex 76bbdc 24 atdc

I hope that is enough to get started on. More than likely use 1.6 rr on each.

Are the lobe numbers 3192/3315?

CompCams makes a lot of camshafts that are 224/230 @ .050. It's the ramp info I'm looking for; the lobe # can tell me that.

But based on what you've posted so far, the CompCams profile is the best of the two; more aggressive ramps.

Jake

P.S. I just re-checked your original posting and the CompCams can't be with the 3192 intake lobe because the valve lift on yours isn't high enough. The 3192 lobe has .567 with a 1.5 rocker.

Still, the CC is the better of the two. Just my opinion.

Ok JAKE, I believe that I have the lobe profile numbers. I just matched them to the specs on my card, but the card doesn't have them on it.
Intake=3314
Exhaust=3315
I have the CC in my 92 right now, but sometimes I think I should go back to the Hot cam. I have changed alot since the hot cam was in, so I can't make a fair comparison between the two. I am running 1.5rr on the CC cam right now also. My heads peak at around 265 @ .550 lift. Thanks

93 Quasar, that cam should be perfect (imho) for a 383 on the street. It will still have a noticeable idle, but I bet the extra cubes help tame it. Don't get me wrong, the 224/230 isn't wild, but it is starting to show it size in a 350. Pretty lumpy idle, and the smallest amount of surging. My friend runs a 224/236 and his surges pretty good while in 1st gear and crawling through a parking lot. By the way, the engine is beautiful. Keep us posted when you start it.

Okay, you've got the 3300 series lobes. They are good lobes but not quite as aggressive as the 3100 series.

With heads that flow as well as yours you definitely need the camshaft to take advantage of their capability. I'd suggest you get the valve lift up to at least .550 otherwise your heads will have flow you won't be taking advantage of ; it's like having it but not using it.

I'd go with 1.6s to kick up the lift in the range of .030

Going with 6 degrees more intake duration (@ .050) usually causes a slight loss of low in torque but it more than pays off mid-rangeand up top, especially with a set of good flowing heads like yours.

What's the CID of your friend's engine and what is the LSA of the cam he chose? Is he Speed Density or MAF?

My friend is using the 224/236 cam in an LT1 350. The cam has a 114 LSA I believe and it is a Nitrous Xtreme Energy grind. He pulled 371 rwhp (N/A) with ported heads, a 48mm throttle body and shorty headers. He was also using the stock injectors at the time. His car is a 97 camaro with a MAF ECU. His car actually has less quircks than mine!

Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for. Something noticeable, but streetable. I was trying to go no more than 230 duration, even with the few extra cubes.

He's got the correct LSA and the duration isn't over the top either. I suspect his surging is a tuning issue.

Do you know what vacuum reading he's getting at idle in gear, closed loop?

It's a six speed w/ 3.42. He now has 4.11 and that helped.
