Default AC compressor help

Looks like my AC decided to start spraying a black oily substance yesterday. It looks like it's coming from between the pully and the housing. Is there a way to fix this or will I be stuck spending the $700 bucks on a new unit?

On that note, will this be ok to drive or is it a matter of time before it seizes up on me?
Any help is appreciated,
Christ

My 87 is doing the same thing-since last summer, my mechanic said mine could seize up any time. That will be when I change over. :seeya

The black oily stuff is oil and dirt sucked into the clutch. I had the same problem when I had an oil leak in my 93. I pryed the clutch out a little and sprayed carb cleaner into the housing followed by a water rinse. If there is a lot there, the clutch will start to slip and smoke will come out from under the hood. Scary until I pulled over and opened the hood and saw the source.

So could I just replace the clutch, worst case. I thought it might be the seal leaking but now that I think about it it still blows cold. Any suggestions?

Your shaft seal is shot. Napa sells a replacement kit for about 50 bucks. You will need to discharge the system, remove the compressor and then take off the clutch and front hub to replace it. Procedure is outlined in the shop manual and if you don't have one, recommend you obtain it before tackling the job. You can use a socket instead of the special tool to seat the new seal. Before recharging, good idea to replace the o-tube as a leaking shaft seal causes additional wear and will put enough metal in the o-tube screen to plug it up. Use Simple Green to get the compressor oil off the underside of the hood as soon as possible. There been some posts about it leeching through the fiberglass and destroying the paint. Replace the accumulator too.
