Default 1984 Headlight Re-build

Hey guys/girls,
I am going to re-build both the left and right headlights. I think that the gears are stripped since they won't open all of the times and there is a horrible screeching sound when they do open. Has anyone done this type of re-build? If so how long does it take? Do you have any tips that you learned the hard way? I would prefer to do this as simply as possible with out any issues. Thanks in advance for any info.

I had a passenger side headlight problem recently on my 86. I pulled the motor and light assembly, opened the motor and found my gears were still in good shape.

My problem was the motor itself, so i sent it to Corvette Central in MI to be rebuilt.

I didn't actually remove my gears, but I did look to see that replacing them wouldn't be too hard to do. Just don't get the metal gears; they're not recommended for our cars.

There are only 6 or 8 screws that hold the motor sides together. Remove them and the gears are right there.

Thanks for the info. Is it pretty difficult to get the motors themselves off? And do you have to pull the entire headlight housing too?

Yes, you have to pull the entire housing.

There are four bolts/screws that hold the flat headlight shield - the one that you see when the headlights are off

There are four more to remove the other shield; the one you see when the headlights are "on". You access half of them from the front of the car and the other half from under the raised hood.

If you turn the headlights "on" BUT stop them half way, you can access the screws/bolts. A couple are torx head (accessed from the front) and the others are 10mm if I remember correctly.

Once the fiberglass pieces are off, there are six nuts (10mm): Two on each side and two on the bottom and one brace nut (accessed fron under the hood), which I think is a 12 mm. .

All of them are easily reached.

Then the last one is a nut which holds the motor to the headlight mounting frame. I think it's a 12 or 14 mm.

Once the motor is separated from the frame, there are about 8 screws that hold the two halfs of the motor together. Remove them, separate the two halfs and you can access the gears.

Really easy to take off.
