My fan motors (both of them on my 95 LT1) have begun to sing. When running they are OK, but as they wind down after the engine stops, both of them squeak, like a bearing is not quite lubed. They just started this after years of silence.
Question: how long until they croak? With summer (and prolonged high fan speed) approaching, do I need to plan on their replacement?
If it were my car it would croak and fly thru the radiator 10 seconds after making a sound. I would plan on replacement. I think they are still serviced in ac delco. You can likely replace the motor only.
I bought one for i think it was about 40 bucks with a lifetime warranty. Mine just froze up and it was middle of summer. I had to wait till traffic died so i can keep the car moving on the freeway. They sold me the motor only. It was actually suprizingly easy to install. good luck :smash:
Thanks for the replies.
I think I'll replace them during the Spring tune-up.
The thought of one of them heading North into the Ron Davis Radiator is too horrible to contemplate.
Replace them immediately. The primary fan motor on my '92 did the exact same thing (squeaking after shut down) and it didn't last long... maybe a month.
The problem is that when the bearing goes bad the motor starts drawing more current. On mine, eventually it drew enough to blow the fuse link to the motor. The first time I saw that anything was wrong was when the temp hit 255. Fortunately it didn't do any damage, but replacing the fuse link, which was buried behind the battery, was just as hard as replacing the motor. I wouldn't drive the car very much before replacing the motors!
