Can you get an automatic trans to shift as well with a power programmer or other program vs. installing a shift kit? I know with some programmers you have different shift point options which would seem like the better choice when it comes to flexibility, but then again I might be wrong.
Though my A4 is a 700R/4 here are some thoughts:
-the shift kit will give you very firm and quick shifts at WOT and some can even be set up for manual shifting (similar to a stick w/o clutch).
-the power programmer can be used to firm up shift points (not sure if at part throttle or at WOT)
-the power programmer can be used to change shift points (i.e. raise/lower them)
If I had a '96 A4 I would try the power programmer to get the shift point/feel were I wanted it. I might also go with a shift kit if I needed firmer WOT shifts or the manual shift feature.
What is your application, i.e. street, strip, auto-cross?

I would guess not - otherwise there would be no need to manufacture a shift kit for the 4L60E. If you're thinking about a shift kit, there's nothing like a TransGo! :)

I installed the trans-go 4L60E-K on my silverado a week ago along with the corvette servo. I absolutely love it! The mushy overlap is gone and nice crisp but not hammering shifts. Highly recommended.
