Silver vs. Black Box?
Sorry this isn't more specific, but the box is on the firewall on Dr. side. I was told it should be silver, coz there were problems with the black one......What is it, and would pep boys carry it?...TIA.....oh sorry, 88 coupe, L-98 engine

More specific would be good but the only "box" that I know started out black and became silver was the ECM...that's your main computer for the engine. Engine Control Module.
If that's what you're talking about, there will be "bunch" of wires...4 bundles running into it.
Your friend is wrong. I believe they changed configuration and color in 93 when they went from OBD1 to OBDII. There is nothing wrong with the black ones anymore than the silver ones...two different computers.

The "black" box ECM was used from `90-`93.
The "silver" `94-`96 cover served as a heat sink.
OBDII started in `96
