On my friend's 85, his trip odometer mantains his miles even after he shuts the engine off. My 86 automatically resets after I shut the car off. If I stop at a gas station and shut the car off, I lost all the miles I had driven.
Is this normal? Did GM change this in 86? What about you guys out there with 86's, does yours do this too? Thanks.
I have a 87 and the trip odometer does not reset unless I rest it. This sounds strange.:skep: I do not have a clue as to what could be the problem. Maybe someone will chim in with a better answer. Good luck ;)

Re: Trip Odometer question (86PACER)
A properly working trip odometer should only reset the miles to zero when the driver presses the trip reset button.
Good news for your friend, bad news for you.
Can you reset the trip odometer with the button while the car is still on?
Or if you hold the button in while you are driving does the readout remain at 0?
No. Does your average MPG reset also? It almost sounds like the connection to the car's 12v source is getting lost when the ignition is off for some reaosn.
Yes, I can reset it while driving. It works fine. It just resets by itself after the ignition key is turned off.
I looked it up in my 86 GM Shop Manual. It says to check for battery voltage at the D5 terminal of the Instrument Cluster connector. This terminal provides cluster memory. If the voltage is good, I need to replace the whole cluster. That is all it says besides checking for loose connections. If the connections are good, I will just leave it alone. I hadly even use it anyway to spend all that money on a new cluster that still works well otherwise. :nonod:

The average MPG resets also when the ignition is turned off . It's done it ever since I had the car and thought it was normal till I took a ride in a friends 85.
Scorp,
does the average MPG not reset when you shut her off? Sounds like I have more problems with my cluster. I did not pay attention to his average MPG readings when he started it back up.

It should not reset unless you hold reset just like the tripometer. I say you are going in the right direction checking for that memory power. :yesnod:

86,
I had a similar problem on a totally unrelated gm vehicle. My 1990 S-10 blazer (Winter vehicle) with the digidash suddenly started doing exactly what you were describing. This may sound odd, but check your taillamp fuse/circuit. My aftermarket, older radio shorted out internally somehow (I think the ground was hooked up to the dimmer or something) Blowing my taillamp fuse. As soon as I repaired the problem in that circuit, The trip odo began working properly again. (All a coinceidental, yet interesting situation) The only reason the trip odo ever worked properly again was due to the fact i got pulled over for having no tailligts! Taking into consideration both of these vehicles are made by the general, this could be a common problem b/c they both have digidashes. I really hope to come back to this topic and find out I was of help to you. Take a peek at it
