The beam doesn't HAVE to come out, but its makes it worlds easier. You can otherwise unbolt it and whack it to the passenger side to make some more room.

84 Driveshaft ujoint replacement
I just the Helms manual regarding the replacement of the driveshaft ujoints. Does the entire exhaust system actually need to be removed? I removed the cat to the mufflers. I can see the driveshaft pretty well. What about the support beam, does it need to come out?

Yes the support beam should come out. There's not much room to get the driveshaft out unless you do. At least for me, it seems easier that way.
