I live in Cali so i have to deal with the smog nuts. What should i really expect from SLP shortie headers? I don't want to go off numbers on their website. Should i see a significant increase over stock?(I have Magnaflow mufflers).
It's really hard to say. My long tubes and exhaust gave me 23 hp and 32 pounds of torque. That was a very healthy gain, but it wasn't on a stock motor. I already had a cam so I'm sure the headers complimented that to an extent.
The stock manifolds are complete crap so it would have to help some, it's just hard to quantify how much that may be. I'd honestly have to say that the biggest improvvement would be visual appeal under the hood and easier spark plug access.
I have a set of SLP Shorties.. I cant really say if I noticed all that much of an improvement in power, but 1) they look much better, and 2) make changing the spark plugs MUCH MUCH MUCH easier!!! :D
You'll save some weight over the manifolds with shorties. You save a ton if you can remove the cats too. It never occured to me why my floor jack fit easily under my frame rail but not my friend's car. After we installed his headers and had the exhaust welded up we needed to get back under it to hook up the O2's. My jack when right under his rail easily, where I usually had to force it.
Then it dawned on me why. About a 16th of an inch is all it gave us, but that's all it needs. Those manifolds and cats are HEAVY.
Well, I was bored last week... looking at my motor.
Decided the heat shields on the manifolds were annoying... so I took those off. To get the back side off, its easiest to remove the manifold entirely, so I did that.
As long as the manifold is off, I might as well cut the AIR tubes off. Then I notice the AIR tubes stick into the exhaust flow. So I pull out the die-grinder and whack the AIR tubes off of the inside. So now I have four huge holes in my manifold.
Out comes the wirefeed, out comes grinder. Get it looking nice and ready to reinstall. As I'm putting on the gaskets I notice a lot of excess weld on the pipe to flange junction. Could this be restricting the exhaust?
Back out comes the die grinder and clean up all the factory weld and open up the manifold.
Total time - 3 hours.
Does it flow better? Is it faster?
Probably not, but it does look a lot nicer and I feel a bit better.
