Re: Would this true ram air mod work.....? (CorvetteRay)
That setup should work fine; it is typical of one of three types of ram/cold air intake systems:
-take in air through the front license plate area
-take in air through a hole cut in the radiator shroud, like TPIS and others
-take in air through a scoop extending down into the radiator air stream, like SLP
The pros are that you get a nice HP gain if you bump fuel pressure a little; the cons are that you have to cut your stock radiator shroud.
Some people worry about injesting water but I run the SLP ram air for nearly 3yrs and have never had such a problem. The only warning is to not drive through standing water over 6-8" deep.
Re: Would this true ram air mod work.....? (CorvetteRay)
You can make that kit yourself. Cut the airlid out, install a k&n, cut the whole box in half, pop rivet/glue the box together after turning it upside down. Then cut your hole in the raidiator shrowd. Dosn't look as good but its free. Just goin a step further than just cuttin the lid. That kit you got looks nice and stock  how much$
I don't have either kits... yet. I like the Vortex Rammer Cold Air but at $369.99 for 20-25HP, does it make sense? As far as doing it myself-cutting things up... is there a color diagram on the Net about how to do it right?
Bottom line is it worth the 20-25HP? Doing it yourself is a hassle.... might mess it up too. Or you pay $300.00 more/less....
Re: Would this true ram air mod work.....? (CorvetteRay)
I've had the BPP Vortex "cold air" system for several years. I'm on my second unit after the first failed due to warping. This unit is now showing the signs of warpage as well.
Given the two units you're looking at, I'd choose the first one. I'm going to go with the AO Engineering ram air that goes through the front license plate.
Re: Would this true ram air mod work.....? (CorvetteRay)
Yeah....
I agree with the other posts here. For a "true" Ram Effect, you need to go through the license plate area or a sealed NACA duct or other scoop arrangement on the hood. These devices pick up air from the same place as a stock unit does but cost you lots of bucks. I see no advantage to either, less the cone K&N filter.

Ray and interested others: IM me and I will hook you up with a source to purchase the API intake at a reduced price. Nothing in it for me, but not sure about rules regarding recommending places to buy from on the forum and don't want to make waves.

I have my car apart .. I'll post a picture of my custom ramair/openlid set up.
It actually sucks air from the bottom kinda like the upside down stocker in the first website.... and also from the top with the open lid!!
I cut the shroud to accomadate a smaller "FORD" Ranger K&n filter perfectly ...
I cut the hole smaller than the Filter which is pushed in the square hole then jams up on the outter lip of the filter.
I cut the bottom of the stock airlfilter box a bit smaller than the filter itself ... I glued some thin weather stripping around the edge of the filter so when I Sandwich the airfilter box on top of the K&N Filter it makes a good seal!!
It pulls air like crazy!!!!
I felt good low end power punch ...
Best of both worlds .. .. . and best of all the ford K&N filter cost me 10 bucks on ebay.... The rest is all labor... and innovation. FREE.
I don't think anyone has this setup ... maybe somebody does but I came up with it on my own... and never heard of anyone doing it.
I'll post pics tomorrow since I'm in the middle of a Water pump swap... and everything is apart anyways.
Re: Would this true ram air mod work.....? (smallblock)
SmallBlock, I just installed the forced air system today on my 85. It was a PAIN in the butt to cut through that fiberglass...but did get it done...What kind of difference did you recieve with this setup? thanks
