Anyone know what size bolt fits into the pump shaft? Need to press on pulley and need a bolt that will screw in shaft; can't see buying a special tool when a bolt and plate would do the same. Tried matching a bolt at the auto parts store but their inventory was pretty messed up.
Re: Installing pulley on power steering pump (RichK)
Advance Auto and Auto Zone have "loaner" tools that you pay a deposit and get this back when the tool is returned. You do not have to buy the parts there to get a loaner tool. This is a great idea for those who want to do the work themselves and do not want to buy a lot of tools. Hope this is helpful!
Re: Installing pulley on power steering pump (RichK)
I asked the guys at my parts store about a tool for reinstallation and they told me that when you buy a new pump it comes with a bolt and washers to reinstall the pulley. They went back and opened a box and took the bolt out and matched it up with one out of their stock of bolts. I can't remember the size but maybe you could ask your parts store to do the same.
Re: Installing pulley on power steering pump (dcm1)
I recently replaced the pump on my car, what a pain.I bought the tool and the bolt that came with it was useless by the time I got done, bent and striped.I dont know if the threads are metric or standard. The tool wasnt that much. The hardest part was keeping the pump shaft-pulley stationary while I turned the bolt while it pulled the pulley onto the shaft.Im not looking foward to doing it again anytime soon. :banghead:

What ever you do make sur you get the right threads. if you get the wrong one it will fit but loose. if the pump shaft threads are striped..............well then it's time for a new pump. sure is a nasty job I had to do it four times in a row as I got 3 bad rebuilts! it's a 1/2 hour job for me now lot's of experience. darn near wore out the pulley pulling & pressin it so much
