Default Checking codes

How do you check codes using a paper clip. I guy showed me a while ago but I don't remember what he actually did with the paper clip. I have a "93.

Locate the ALDL under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Remove the plastic cover (if it still is on there), insert a bent paper clip ends into pins A & B (upper right), turn On the ignition and cound the SES flashes.

You will first see three "12"s, followed by each error code flashed three times, followed up by another three "12"s.

Jot down the error codes, turn the ignition Off, remove the paper clip and install the ALDL cover.

Thanks checked for codes but all I got were 12's.
I've had this problem with the engine surging after the car is warm thought there would be a trouble code for it. Any ideas?
